This might seem a bit of a squeeze, but what if the poem starts at both ends, and the location is in the middle?

Nice idea, but it might be a bit of a stretch keeping the clues contiguous. However, I do think there are non-contiguous hints that help with the linear progression of the clues. One thing I do agree with is that your destination is roughly in the middle of the poem. IMO, the later lines help with direction, and the final stanza contains an instruction of vital importance.
