It is surely understandable that the more time passes without resolution to that which so many of us poured our time, minds and hearts into, those same people become restless and irritable. More and more I see searchers becoming less circumspect in their posts. I am no exception. We are quick to declare the ideas of others wrong or stupid, or even more often, declare our ideas as the only possible conclusions that could be reached. Those are neither kind nor wise positions. If this puzzle has demonstrated anything, it's the ability it has to be interpreted in an almost countless number of ways.
For those who feel they have THE solution, I suggest you create a thread here and post it - once. Given how strongly searchers feel about their own ideas, it is unlikely that you will garner a lot of support for those ideas, but at least it will be out there for all to see, and we won't keep rehashing the same debates over and over and over ....
And for those who simply want to express an idea on a particular concept, the rest of us might try some restraint in our responses. The fact that those ideas don't match up with our own does not necessarily disqualify them. No one really knows how well the author succeeded in presenting a challenging yet fair puzzle. No one really knows what to make of his various statements, especially when contradictions are evident. Was he dishonest, forgetful or sly?
The forum is here for a free exchange of ideas, not didactic presentations or abusive commentary. I'll try to be better; hope the rest of you will as well. And now I'll get off my soapbox.
