There were thousands of people, all taking a different approach to it.
It was like having a supercomputer work out all the possible solutions.
Someone finally hit the right combination.

Although Fenn said you needed to solve all 9 clues, I think the main issue was that very few people (maybe only Jack) came up with the right WWWH and HoB. Once you had that combination, you might have been able to deduce the others by BOTG trial and error, with a careful reading of the 3 books and a little research thrown in. I agree with the OP that too many people hitched their wagons to spurious and hopeful WWWHs and HoBs.

In my opinion most of the YNP Madison River searchers failed because they didn’t cross the river. The ones who did cross the river failed because they couldn’t find the damaged blaze. Many of those who started the Chase later (after about 2015) failed because of all the misinformation that was out there by that time.

          That's pretty profound.

Uhm, RFISH , I hate to inform you but Dal's site has been shut down for quite some time now... Dal made a PDF compilation of the scrapbooks which can be referenced. Good quote though, I can attest to that, imagination is key. PS - Calling someone a retard doesn't make you any smarter, on the contrary, it makes you more like a donkey.

Confirmation Bias. Plain, simple and straightforward is the solution. U have to be willing to be detached from your solves and cross them out through trial and error, a process of simplification and elimination. I had 12 major solves, each with sub-solves. I didn't reach the Blaze until my 12th solve, and it was through a process of elimination of two other possible similar solves, each of which I tested until I found the correct path. The final solve was bullet proof, every box was checked, the lines all crossed perfectly. Practice makes perfect, they say. But persistence gets results. Edison was one one of my inspirations. He found 999 ways that you don't make a working filament before his Eureka! moment... My Eureka! moment came with a slip up of Fenn's in an interview, and later with Teachers with ropes. Did you know Kathryn Beaumont, Wendy (Peter Pan)/Alice (Alice in Wonderland) grew up to become a school teacher like Ms. ForD? She taught school for over 30 years, bless her heart.

I'm going to go with: failing to figure out the first clue.

Some good responses have been posted on this thread. Those of us still in the hunt are still learning, and likely getting closer to having the treasure. For us, ultimate failure is not an option.
I admit that I'm surprised that WWWH seems/seemed so difficult for so many.

In light of the life or death debate going on:

                      Handle With Care

                      Dewdrops on flowers
                      Playing for hours
                      Orange blossoms painting the trees

                      Birds sweetly singing
                      Melodies ringing
Watching leaves dance in the breeze

                      Chorus:
                      Life is
                      Knowing and feeling
                      Loving and giving
                      Good times to share
                      God made
                      Life to be precious
                      All living things
                      Should be handled with care

                      Verse 2:
                      Strawberry ice cream
                      Acting out daydreams
                      Laughing in spring's morning light

                      Teasing my kittens
                      Snowflakes and mittens
                      Fireflies lighting the night

                      Chorus:
                      Life is
                      Knowing and feeling
                      Loving and giving
                      Good times to share
                      God made
                      Life to be precious
                      All living things
                      Should be handled with care

                      All living things
                      Should be handled with care
