They're just the right diameter to fit in old style 15lb lead pipes formerly used in sewer drains out to a cesspool or leechfield before they made PVC. I suggest the family use metal detectors around the property and in the crawlspace. If you find some old lead pipes that look like trash, and they're capped on both ends, you found it. In the book there were hundreds of Double Eagles hidden in pipes in the basement of an old family homestead, and forgotten until Bobby Western figures it out, and uses a metal detector to find the pipes. People had been living in this house, which was Bobby's friend Oiler's home for decades. They were apparently unaware that an ancestor in the 1930's hid a huge stash of double eagles rather than than turn them in to the feds in 1933. When Oiler dies, his sister tells Bobby of a note, and Bobby figures its meaning. The weight of 15lb lead pipes by themselves, and their presence as apparent construction detritus, prevented anybody from ever looking more closely at them, and you would need a vice and two large wrenches to get those ends off. A job for a plumber, and so perhaps suggesting the hider of the stash was also a plumber.
Interesting. And there's that Cormac McCarthy name again. Wasn't he the one who hid something in his library section at a university?
This whole story gets more and more fascinating, and I would not put it past Forrest to have done so. One of the items on his bucket list was to write a great book.
Methinks, he did so. And we may not yet comprehend just how much so.

I am so happy with my fellow Searchers for not letting this die on the vine.

This is a second reply to this.
I think whatever was found was probably a document of some sort. Something that informed the family of something. Likely not the real solve, though.

You mean this? My Confession: The Recollections of a Rogue That was one of his sources for Blood Meridian, and very likely, imho, the place where The Judge came together in his mind. Further research on my part confirms it through The Judge's last name Holden, which leads us back to Fenn and the title character of that unreliably narrated classic, Catcher in the Rye. But I'm not looking for Cormac's confession and he's already well served in that area.

Looks like something is coming relatively soon, our YT is good and all, but I like a place for actual discussion, which doesn't seem to be happening anywhere else. I really didn't understand timing and such.

And looks like we may have some new potential members looking for a place. The other venues they tried and didn't seem to fit with them. It all makes me scratch my head how quickly things change. I never seem to be able to get on stable ground in this crazy hunt.

Looking for a mod to help, as I won't be able to react as quickly as when things happen but the main FF forum may just need to come back. PM me here if you are interested.

Good thing about me, I will change my mind, even when I error, like GPS Turd. And could care less about the trolls.

No promises on the future, but my mind is more open than ever before.
I'd be happy to help, I've moderated in the past and if you need some help, I'm here, just PM me.

Here’s a suggestion for moderation - give one warning and then boot them for good. And don’t let them back under another name. That will simplify things for you.
